Understanding Three Talents & Five Grids
What do Heaven, Person, and Earth mean in a name reading? Follow one name from its stroke counts to its Three Talents configuration.
A Chinese name carries sound, meaning, and family identity. Three Talents and Five Grids (三才五格) add a traditional numerological perspective, using character stroke counts. This guide explains the conventions used by NeoChing so you can understand the results alongside the qualities you want in a name.
What are the Three Talents (三才)?
Here, “talents” refers to Heaven, Person, and Earth, rather than three personal abilities. In name numerology, these are three positions calculated from the surname and given name:
- Heaven (天格, Tiān gé): the surname position, traditionally associated with family background and inherited circumstances.
- Person (人格, Rén gé): the meeting point of surname and given name, traditionally associated with the self and one's central path.
- Earth (地格, Dì gé): the given-name position, traditionally associated with one's foundation and early development.
Each position's number becomes an element according to its last digit. Read the resulting configuration in the order Heaven / Person / Earth.
| Last digit | Element | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1 or 2 | Wood 木 | 11, 22 |
| 3 or 4 | Fire 火 | 13, 24 |
| 5 or 6 | Earth 土 | 15, 26 |
| 7 or 8 | Metal 金 | 17, 28 |
| 9 or 0 | Water 水 | 19, 20 |
The Earth grid is a position; Earth is also one of the five elements. An Earth grid can therefore have a Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water element.
Why does the combination matter?
Traditional readings consider how the elements support or restrain one another. The generating cycle is Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood. The controlling cycle is Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood. A practitioner explanation of these cycles and the digit mapping is available in Four Pillars' Three Talents guide (Japanese).
These relationships help explain the idea of harmony between the three positions. NeoChing looks up the complete, ordered combination in its Three Talents table to show a rating such as “Very Auspicious” or “Mostly Inauspicious”; it does not simply count generating relationships. Schools and tables can differ.
How the Five Grids (五格) are calculated
Three Talents uses the first three of the five grids. The remaining two are Total (總格, Zǒng gé), traditionally associated with the overall life course, and Outer (外格, Wài gé), associated with social relationships.
For the one- or two-character surnames and given names supported by our tool, the rules are:
- Heaven: add the surname strokes; add 1 if the surname has only one character.
- Person: add the last surname character's strokes to the first given-name character's strokes.
- Earth: add the given-name strokes; add 1 if the given name has only one character.
- Total: add all actual character strokes, without any extra 1.
- Outer: add the first surname character's strokes (or 1 for a single-character surname) to the last given-name character's strokes (or 1 for a single-character given name).
The extra 1 is a conventional virtual stroke, not a change to the character itself. For a two-character surname such as 歐陽, Heaven uses both characters without adding 1, while Person starts with 陽, the last surname character.
Why Kangxi strokes matter
NeoChing uses Kangxi dictionary stroke counts, which can differ from everyday handwriting counts. It looks up the exact characters you enter; it does not automatically convert simplified characters into traditional ones. Confirm the intended spelling and counting convention when comparing results from different sites.
Verified stroke overrides take priority over dictionary counts. If a count is unavailable, suggestions can still show meanings, but no grid score or Three Talents rating is calculated until the missing counts are supplied in Check mode.
A worked example: 陳俊涵
Take the surname 陳 and given name 俊涵. Our Kangxi dictionary gives 陳 = 16, 俊 = 9, and 涵 = 12 strokes.
| Grid | Calculation | Three Talents element |
|---|---|---|
| Heaven 天格 | 16 + 1 = 17 | Metal (ends in 7) |
| Person 人格 | 16 + 9 = 25 | Earth (ends in 5) |
| Earth 地格 | 9 + 12 = 21 | Wood (ends in 1) |
| Total 總格 | 16 + 9 + 12 = 37 | Not used in Three Talents |
| Outer 外格 | 1 + 12 = 13 | Not used in Three Talents |
The Three Talents configuration is therefore Metal / Earth / Wood (金土木). These elements come from the numbers 17, 25, and 21, independently of what the characters mean. This is a calculation example, not a recommendation to choose this particular name.

Look up any of your five grid numbers here. This is the number table used for NeoChing's five-grid score, separate from the Three Talents combination rating. Other traditions may classify individual numbers differently.

These are traditional symbolic descriptions, not predictions about a person. For grid numbers above 81, NeoChing subtracts 81 repeatedly until the number is within 1–81 (for example, 82 → 1). Some references use a different convention: the Chinese 81-number article on WeChat describes subtracting 80 for company names. This guide follows our personal-name calculator. The phrase “Three Talents number” in entry 3 is that number's description, not your name's Three Talents configuration.
How to read your checker or suggestion results
The result combines several perspectives. They answer different questions, so their ratings can differ:
- Meanings and pronunciation: AI estimates of how a name reads and what it expresses. Confirm these with a fluent speaker, including the family's dialect and possible homophones.
- Grid score: a weighted rating from the five numbers' entries in the 81-number table. NeoChing weights Heaven, Person, and Earth at 25% each, Total at 15%, and Outer at 10%. An auspicious entry earns its full weight, moderately auspicious earns 70% of that weight, and unlucky earns zero. Numbers above 81 cycle through 1–81 for this lookup; Three Talents still uses each original grid number's last digit.
- Three Talents: a separate rating of the Heaven / Person / Earth element combination. It is not included in the weighted grid score, so a high grid score can accompany a less favorable Three Talents rating.
- Element preferences in suggestions: a comparison of the given-name characters' estimated semantic elements with the priorities you supplied. These character associations are separate from stroke-derived grid elements. The tool does not calculate birth-chart compatibility.
When element preferences are supplied, suggestions with an avoided-element conflict come last; primary matches come before supporting-only matches and names with no preferred match. The grid score breaks ties within those groups. Three Talents is shown for your consideration rather than used as an additional ranking score.
Use the reading to compare names whose meaning, sound, spelling, and family significance you already like. “Auspicious” describes a traditional classification, not a guarantee; a score of 90 is not a 90% chance of good fortune. An unfavorable label is not a prediction about a person's future.
